Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Aug 2, 2017, Ray M

Tuxtla Ambassadors and FF Sac Hosts on the "Discovery Tree"

Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Inbound from Tuxtla GutiƩrrez Mexico, Day 3 of 8, Aug 2, 2017

By:  Ray M

Today we traveled over 2 hours south and up into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to see the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). These are larger but not quite as tall as the coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens).

Well, actually it took a bit longer than 2 hours  for some of us – road delays for major highway repair just before the park.
Road construction just before the park entrance - a long wait for some!

We all had a nice picnic lunch at the picnic area, then Chris gathered everyone to explain the trails – we don’t want anyone to get lost!

No one gets lost!!

Here's another view of all of us on Discovery Tree. Note the upper part of the tree laying to left.

Here's the 'Empire Tree' with Enrique and Mavi.  Wait - where are Enrique and Mavi?

Oh there they are - a zoom-in photo:

The women's log women only!

Time for a little rest!

Sometimes looking up makes you dizzy.

One tree has a hollow interior.  Pictures below shows a knot hole in the upper part of the tree, about 100ft above the ground originally. You can walk completely through the tree trunk.

After enjoying the Redwoods many of us stopped at Ironstone Vineyards to see the huge Crystalline Gold Nugget.
